The thing has, as seen, one male master port sticking up to accept the phone. The stand has three female ports, unseen in its underbelly. One for charger, one for USB to the computer for synching, one for headphones. Of course, the thing should be charging OFF the USB port. Whatever.You have to have the extra plug for earphones since Sony Ericsson has been avoiding the de facto separate 3.5mm standard for jacking earphones and has been using the male master port for that instead. Said another way, you can only plug one gizmo into the phone at a time - earphones, USB, charger - unless you have this stand.
The CDS-65 is basically the same as the latter versions of the CDS-60, which went through an in-production change to add the clear vertical support bar.
The problem was that, without the support bar, the phone leans back so far when plugged into the off-vertical male master port that it torques that port so much that, eventually, the port doesn't make a good connection with its own circuit board. My computer will 'ding me' that the phone has "disconnected" and/or "reconnected" to/from the computer at smallest movement or vibration.
It's not really that much better WITH the support bar. Essentially, the phone is still tilted, though the support bar takes off some of the weight. Nevertheless, in the long run, the destructive torquing still takes place. I've had to trash about three of these and replace them with new ones in order to keep my sanity.
This is probably one reason why more current Sony Ericsson phones are now designed with its female master port on the left side instead of the bottom. They sell a CDS-75 desk stand to accommodate those phones. It has it's male master port at left, of course. (It also has a vertical bar that runs the full left side of the phone that appears, from the photos, to fully support the phone.)
Why they didn't just make a stand with a truly vertical male master port, with the stand molded to a shape that would snugly accept the very bottom of the phone to bolster it, well that's beyond me. I have such a stand for my Zune80, for instance, and it's no-problem-o. [UPDATE (10/2009): They did. The SonyEricsson U10i releases with a stand included. The entire phone lays down, cradled within the base of the charger stand, on its left-hand side, where the female plug is in the phone.]
There's no third-party aftermarket alternatives. I suppose there's just not enough Sony Ericsson market share to justify it. So you and I will just have to make do with whatever SE issues as OEM.
